Workshop with Rhett Brewer - 6th and 13th of November, 2010.

Composing a Picture-

How compositional decisions can contribute to a painting’s meaning

In this two day workshop Rhett Brewer will present a program consisting of a slide
talk, demonstrations, discussions, exercises and a practical painting class. It will
explore the dynamics of a picture and how certain considerations, at a planning stage,
can greatly enhance the picture’s presence. Examples from a wide range of painting
approaches will be examined and discussed including- The Baroque masters, Abstract
Expressionism and Australian landscape. The relationship between composition and
the ‘reading’ of an image will be analysed and practiced.
In this workshop, which is aimed at Painters, you will produce paintings and collages
but the ideas are also relevant to other image makers like Printmakers, Drawers and
Photographers. It may also suit Year 11 students with planning their major works next
year.
Participants will be informed about the materials to be brought to the workshop by
email. The workshops will run from 9am to 4pm on two consecutive Saturdays with a
small assignment as homework. Cost for the 2 days is $160.
Rhett Brewer has been a professional Artist, Teacher and University Lecturer since
1980. He presented the workshop ‘Painting from Photographic Sources’ at the
BMCAC in April this year. He also recently held a solo exhibition of his paintings-
Myth and Memory at the Depot Gallery in Waterloo.
